General Insurance Services

Work for General Insurance Standards Council

GISC, the self-regulatory body for businesses offering general insurance, has an increasingly important role to play as the industry prepares for statutory regulation under the FSA. Both HM Treasury and FSA have called on GISC to continue its regulatory role to ensure smooth transition to the new regime, and have confirmed that GISC members in good standing will be given due credit in the authorization process. So in addition to regulating existing members and processing increasing numbers of new applications for membership, GISC is also busily planning transition arrangements in liaison with HM Treasury and FSA.

GISC's prime objective is to ensure that general insurance customers are treated fairly. This brings added significance in the lead-up to statutory regulation as it is to the benefit of customers that when the new regime takes effect in January 2005 there continues to be a variety of channels and outlets via which they can buy insurance for themselves and for their businesses. One of our key responsibilities as the industry's current regulator, therefore, is to ensure that GISC members have experience of compliance within an independent and robust regulatory environment as they prepare for statutory regulation - so GISC continues to offer compliance guidance for members, and conferences to help businesses understand how to meet and deliver regulatory requirements.

GISC's effectiveness as a regulator depends on the effectiveness of its staff. Conscientiousness, initiative, enthusiasm and team-work are expected, in return for which is a unique opportunity to help GISC fulfil its regulatory role during the next two years. You will be based in a pleasant working environment at GISC's office on the ninth floor at 110 Cannon Street, just two minutes' walk from the mainline station at Cannon Street, and from Monument and Bank underground stations.

GISC is an equal opportunities employer.
