Living in the UK?

The UK is a fantastic place. It offers a diversity of cultures, places and history unsurpassed anywhere else. It's at the gateway to Europe for weekend breaks and even the weather isn't as bad as people joke! Even so, settling into a new country can be hard. This is what we think you need to know:

Living Costs
This document shows how much you can expect to pay whilst you're in London for rent, entertainment and travel compared to back at home. Remember, rates of pay and permanent salaries are very lucrative here. Also, if you decide to work in Edinburgh or Glasgow most of these living costs will reduce by around a third or more.

Living
With so many options available in each city, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Most people opt for a flat share to keep costs down and to gain an immediate social circle. Most local evening newspapers carry flatshare listings or you can look at www.flatmateclick.co.uk or www.spare-room.co.uk or http://www.loot.com/property/share .

In London, one area which has grown in popularity is the Docklands. This newest and most space age part of London boasts stunning apartment blocks with views across the sky-scrapers and water ways of East London. Rents are relatively reasonable in London terms – typically £400- £700 a month per person and the commuting time to the City and Canary Wharf (London’s main employment centres) is minimal. There are a number of shopping centres, restaurants and bars on your doorstep plus central London is only 20 minutes away.

Medical
Home can feel very far away if you're ill. So once you arrive, register with a General Practitioner (GP) so that you can see a doctor within the national health service (NHS) whenever you need. To find out who you can register with, you'll need to contact your Local Health Authority, wherever you end up living. Alternatively, if you live in London, you may wish to use an independent service. Although expensive they are very convenient, especially if you are moving around. MediCentres can be contacted on 08456 808 999 or found at:
